HomeThe GDP Argument

Why GDP loves cars (Even when they harm us)

What cars do for GDP in the UK

It’s a never-ending battle of making your cars better and also trying to be better yourself.– Dale Earnhardt

In 2018 for example, the car sector contributed £16.6 billion to the UK economy.

This contribution was in direct employment, exports and investment in research & development in the car sector.
The UK car industry is a major employer, with around 800,000 people working in the sector, including manufacturing, sales, and maintenance.
However the argument here is: More cars are a menace, and bad GDP is being generated, without the corresponding growth in 'renewable travel.'
The figures show that growth in new cars has been re-ignited since lower 2019 levels. Despite more zero emission cars registered, the overall total of cars has increased, adding to ' the Car Menace.'

Zero emission LGVs accounted for 9% of all new registrations on the road, compared to 6% in 2024

However Qualitative improvements can replace the GDP lost from reducing car dependency, which leads to:

Cleaner air
Safer streets
More walkable towns
Better public health
Less noise
More green space

Productivity rises when car dependency falls. Countries with lower car use (Netherlands, Denmark, Japan) have:

higher productivity
Lower healthcare costs
Less congestion
Higher life satisfaction
More efficient cities
This is a qualitative dividend

The Netherland's answer: a switch to trams and cycling

A country with low car dependency and high productivity

When car dependency falls, GDP shifts to new industries that spring up such as :

Public transport
Cycling infrastructure
Urban regeneration
Green technology
Local retail and services
Health and Wellbeing sectors

Well planned cycle and walking infrastructures in sustainable cities

Reducing cars, reduces bad GDP.

Increasing quality of life increases good GDP
The net effect can be positive, even although headline GDP may decrease in the short term
This is a sophisticated modern stance

The race for Electric Vehicles (EVs) is a myth unless:

We reduce the number of cars on the road.
We stop searching for rare earth materials for battery production.
We stop going to war to aquire rare earth materials.
We must realize that the real solution is to reduce car dependency, not just switch to electric ones.

What the data shows:

Only 18% of car trips in the UK are for commuting.
Around 60% of trips are for leisure, shopping, school runs, visiting friends, and “miscellaneous personal” travel.
The average car is parked 95% of the time.
The majority of households with cars, also live within walking distance of a bus stop or rail station.

Cars are kept because they are convenient,
not because public transport is impossible.

Could the UK rail network cope if most car owners 'scrapped their cars'?

The honest answer is :
- No - not instantly.
- Yes - with realistic targeted investment.

Rail useage today is still below pre-Covid levels.
Many lines have spare capacity outside peak hours.
The network used to carry far more passengers in the 2010's, than it does today.

The real issue is peak-time bottlenecks, not total capacity.

Off-peak travel and peak travel bottlenecks in the UK compared
